clue

Spanish records say that when La Galga ran ashore on Assateague they were told that they were in Virginia near the border of Maryland. The Sheriff of Worcester County, Maryland, wanted the wreck so a disagreement ensued as to where the vessel was situated. Two months after the wreck, Captain Don Daniel Huony wrote to Samuel Ogle, Maryland's governor, from Norfolk, Virginia:

"Honorable Sir: His Catholick Majesty's Ship the Greyhound [Galga] I commanded having wrecked upon the Island of Assateague the 6th of the expired N. S., the Country People, telling me She lay in Virginia, was the Motive that made me write to the President, giving him an Account of My Misfortunes that Occasioned my being castaway in his Government &c. But now understanding, that by a late experiment of an East Line drawn (to know the bounds) its found, She lyes within twice her length of it in Maryland, I see its to you I should give the aforesaid Account as Governor of that Province, wherefore I hope you will excuse my Mistake, as proceeding from a wrong Information, & consequently involuntary in me..."

The location of this vessel was made public when the Archives of Maryland were printed in 1913 which contains this letter.

Since then, writers of local history have repeated the location and it has become common knowledge. But the location proved to be a riddle that can only now be explained. Read The Hidden Galleon to find out.
