On August 18, 1750, La Galga cleared Havana, Cuba destined for Cadiz, Spain. She was carrying small amounts of treasure, tons of tobacco, and mahogany planks for the windows and doors of King Ferdinand VI's opulent palace being built in Madrid. After enduring 1twelve days in a hurricane, she drove ashore  on September 5th on the deserted beaches of Assateague Island, Virginia, leaving behind an enduring legend that survives today in the wild horses that run free and which are commonly known today as Chincoteague Ponies
